What people think about Pokémon the Movie 2000
Pokémon the Movie 2000 is where the franchise suddenly feels mythic, turning its familiar world into a sea-swept legend of ancient prophecy, elemental forces, and a hero’s journey that’s easy to follow even if you’re not a superfan. Director Kunihiko Yuyama keeps the tone bright and wholesome, but lets the stakes swell into genuinely rousing adventure as storms rage, legendary birds clash, and the film leans into that awe kids feel when nature itself seems alive. It’s charming without talking down, with Ash and friends at their most earnest, Pikachu providing heart, and even the comic relief landing better than you’d expect. If you want gritty complexity, this isn’t it—and some intense cartoon peril may spook very little kids—but if you’re on the fence, this is the Pokémon movie that most cleanly captures wonder, momentum, and big-screen fun.
Pokémon the Movie 2000 is clearly trying to feel bigger than the TV show, with a mythic prophecy, end-of-the-world weather chaos, and Ash positioned as a “chosen one” hero in a classic save-the-balance-of-nature adventure. The problem is it rarely earns that epic tone: the story is simple but oddly choppy, the “adventure” beats can feel like a checklist of islands and treasures, and the animation and voice work (especially in some dubs) can make the whole thing feel flatter than it should. If you’re not already invested in Pokémon characters and lore, you may find the stakes loud rather than exciting, and the villain more cartoonish than compelling. Still, the Legendary birds/Lugia spectacle and a few sincere, kid-friendly emotional notes can land if you’re watching for nostalgia or with younger fans who just want Pokémon doing cool stuff.
