Skipped Parts (2000)
A woman and her son must leave a small South Carolina town because of her wild behavior.
What people think about Skipped Parts
Skipped Parts is a small, tender coming-of-age film that feels like a half-remembered summer: funny in the way real life is funny, and quietly aching when it stumbles into adulthood too soon. Tamra Davis frames 1963 Wyoming with an offbeat, bittersweet glow, letting Bug Hall’s bookish Sam and Mischa Barton’s fearless Maurey play their curiosity and confusion with disarming honesty, while Jennifer Jason Leigh brings a live-wire unpredictability to a mother who’s equal parts magnetic and maddening. It’s a movie that trusts emotions more than melodrama, finding warmth in unlikely found-family corners even as it brushes up against heavier subjects like pregnancy and choice. Not everyone will click with its frank teen sexuality and shaggy, slice-of-life rhythm, but if you like character-driven dramedies that are brave enough to be awkward and sincere, this one sneaks up on you and stays.
Skipped Parts is clearly aiming for a quirky, coming-of-age dramedy about a free-spirited mother, a bookish teen, and small-town hypocrisy, with big topics like sex, pregnancy, and family control folded into the mix. The problem is the movie can’t settle on a lane: it swings between cheeky sex comedy and earnest moral lesson, and that tonal whiplash makes the jokes land flat and the drama feel oddly preachy. A lot of plot points are treated with the same emotional weight, so moments that should sting (or sparkle) can blur into a samey, sitcom-to-PSA rhythm. If you’re sensitive to teen sexual material or want a consistently sharp comedy or grounded drama, this may test your patience—but if you’re in the mood for offbeat 60s nostalgia and can forgive uneven execution, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s commitment and the film’s willingness to tackle taboo subjects are the main draws.
