Joy Ride (2001)
Three young people on a road trip from Colorado to New Jersey talk to a trucker on their CB radio, then must escape when he turns out to be a psychotic killer.
What people think about Joy Ride
Joy Ride is the kind of lean, mean thriller that reminds you how terrifying a wide-open highway can feel when the wrong voice crackles through the speakers, and director John Dahl milks that simple setup for every drop of dread. It moves with the snap of a great B-movie—tight, efficient, and constantly escalating—while still giving you characters you can latch onto, especially with Steve Zahn bringing nervous, combustible energy that makes the danger feel human instead of mechanical. The vibe is sweaty, nocturnal, and relentlessly tense, the sort of movie that turns mundane pit stops and passing headlights into reasons to hold your breath. It’s not for anyone who wants a gentle ride or is squeamish about violence and intensity, but if you’re craving a white-knuckle suspense trip that never coasts, this one delivers.
Joy Ride is clearly aiming for a lean, old-school road thriller where one dumb prank spirals into a relentless game of cat-and-mouse, and it does deliver some tense stretches and a solid sense of open-road paranoia. The problem is it often feels like it’s running on familiar genre fumes, with twists you can see coming and character decisions that require you to swallow a fair bit of “because the movie needs it.” If you’re picky about plausibility or you want a mystery that rewards close attention, this may leave you rolling your eyes more than gripping the armrest. But if you’re in the mood for a straightforward early-2000s chase movie with a nasty hook and a few effective suspense beats, it can still be a decent one-night watch.
