The Time Shifters (1999)
Tom Merrick gets caught up in a time-traveling conspiracy and must set the timeline right before it is irrevocably altered.
What people think about The Time Shifters
The Time Shifters is the kind of late-’90s sci-fi thriller that doesn’t pretend to be high art—it just grabs you by the collar and sprints, powered by a deliciously pulpy “what if time tourism went wrong?” hook. Director Mario Azzopardi keeps the vibe brisk and conspiratorial, stacking near-misses, ticking clocks, and reality-shifting paranoia in a way that makes it easy to watch “one more scene” until the credits roll. Casper Van Dien sells the everyman panic with surprising earnestness, and Catherine Bell brings a steady, human counterweight that keeps the story from floating away into pure gimmick. If you’re allergic to B-movie edges and TV-era sheen, it may not convert you—but if you want reasonably distracting, high-concept fun with a thriller’s momentum, this one hits the spot.
The Time Shifters is clearly aiming for a slick, high-concept thriller about “time tourism” and the moral mess of changing history, and the premise is strong enough to hook you early. But the execution feels very late-’90s TV-movie: the dialogue can be clunky, the action is more functional than exciting, and the time-travel rules get a bit convenient when the plot needs a shove. If you’re expecting a tightly written sci-fi puzzle or big-screen spectacle, you’ll probably end up irritated rather than thrilled. Still, Casper Van Dien brings earnest momentum, and there’s a pulpy, page-turner pace that can make it a decent pick if you like B-grade time-travel conspiracies and don’t mind rough edges.
