Pete Docter’s film moves with the snap of great comedy, letting John Goodman’s tender, hulking Sulley and Billy Crystal’s motor-mouthed Mike play off each other like an old vaudeville duo dropped into a state-of-the-art animated playground. Beneath the nonstop laughs and visual invention, there’s a surprisingly heartfelt core that earns its emotion without ever turning syrupy, thanks in no small part to Boo’s disarming presence. If you’re allergic to family-friendly sentiment, you may find it a touch soft around the edges—but for most viewers, it’s the kind of smart, joyful movie that reminds you why animation can feel like magic.

“Monsters, Inc.” is aiming for a warm, imaginative buddy-comedy with a big heart, using the monster-world gimmick to flip fear into friendship. If you’re coming in expecting rapid-fire jokes on the level of “Shrek” or Pixar’s sharper, more adult-winking entries, you may find the humor gentler, the plot fairly straightforward, and the emotional beats doing more of the heavy lifting.
