The script is sly in the best way, playing with what you think a Scooby mystery is “supposed” to be, then nudging the formula just enough to keep you pleasantly off-balance without ever losing the family-friendly charm. Add in the Hex Girls—an inspired dose of gothic-rock energy that gives the movie a musical pulse—and you’ve got an animated whodunit that’s more atmospheric, funnier, and sharper than it needs to be. If you only like your Scooby-Doo strictly goofy and weightless, the darker fantasy edge might surprise you, but for most viewers it’s exactly what makes this one such a standout.

If you want classic “mask comes off, case closed” logic and minimal gimmicks, the later stretch may strike you as noisy and a bit contrived. Still, the atmosphere is fun, the banter is dependable, and the Hex Girls are memorable enough that many fans forgive the messiness.
