Zoolander (2001)
Clear the runway for Derek Zoolander, VH1's three-time male model of the year. His face falls when hippie-chic Hansel scooters in to steal this year's award. The evil fashion guru Mugatu seizes the opportunity to turn Derek into a killing machine. It's a well-designed conspiracy and only with the help of Hansel and a few well-chosen accessories like Matilda can Derek make the world safe for male models everywhere.
What people think about Zoolander
Zoolander is special because it commits, without blinking, to a gloriously stupid idea and somehow turns it into razor-sharp satire—an airheaded fever dream that skewers fashion’s vanity while still loving the spectacle. Ben Stiller plays Derek with such sincere dim-bulb intensity that every pose and pause becomes a punchline, and Owen Wilson’s blissed-out Hansel adds a perfect counter-rhythm, like a parody that wandered in from a cooler universe. The movie moves with manic energy, firing off quotable gags, deadpan absurdity, and celebrity cameos so fast you barely have time to recover before the next ridiculous image lands. If you don’t enjoy broad, cartoonish comedy and jokes that revel in their own nonsense, it may not be your runway—but if you do, this is a cult classic for a reason.
Zoolander is trying to be a gleefully dumb satire of fashion-world vanity, celebrity culture, and macho insecurity, and when it’s on, it’s hilariously committed to its own nonsense. The catch is that the humor is aggressively one-note—lots of repeated bits, broad performances, and cameo-driven winks that can feel like a sketch stretched to feature length. If you don’t enjoy absurdity played straight, or you need sharper satire and tighter pacing, this will likely wear out its welcome fast. But if you’re in the mood for quotable stupidity, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson’s deadpan rivalry delivers enough silly charm to make the ride worthwhile.
