Erin Brockovich takes a familiar David-versus-Goliath courtroom setup and makes it feel bracingly alive, because it’s less interested in legal jargon than in the force of one messy, loud, stubbornly decent person who refuses to let suffering be filed away. Julia Roberts turns Erin into a walking spark plug—funny, abrasive, vulnerable, and impossible to ignore—while Steven Soderbergh keeps the storytelling lean and human, letting humor and compassion sit right alongside real anger. The movie’s great pleasure is watching trust get built conversation by conversation, as small-town faces and quiet grief become the moral engine of the fight. It does have frequent strong language and a deliberately in-your-face attitude, so it won’t be everyone’s comfort watch, but if you like dramas that leave you energized rather than drained, this one earns its cheers.

If you want a tightly focused legal thriller with razor-sharp investigation and courtroom fireworks, you may find it a bit scattered and oddly low on genuine tension for such a huge scandal. But if you’re in the mood for a profanity-laced, performance-driven empowerment drama with a big-hearted payoff and a strong Roberts/Finney dynamic, it’s a solid use of your time.
