Romance (1999)
Frustrated by the lack of intimacy in her relationship, a young schoolteacher goes through a series of intimidating and often violent sexual partners.
What people think about Romance
Romance is special because it treats desire not as titillation but as a cold, clear-eyed inquiry into what intimacy can cost when love and sex refuse to line up. Catherine Breillat directs with an “icy fascination,” letting the film’s stark eroticism feel more like a philosophical pressure test—of power, gender expectations, and the uneasy split between what a person thinks they want and what their body is drawn toward. It’s compelling in the way a difficult conversation is compelling: you may flinch, you may disagree, but it’s hard to dismiss because every scene seems to be reaching for meaning rather than sensation. This is not for everyone—there are intimidating and violent sexual encounters, including sexual assault—yet for viewers open to challenging, confrontational cinema, it’s a bracing, unforgettable work.
Romance is trying to be a blunt, confrontational study of female desire, power, and alienation, using explicit sex as its primary language rather than a side detail. The problem is that Breillat’s provocation can feel more like a thesis statement than a lived-in story, with characters that read as ideas and a tone that many viewers experience as emotionally thin and self-important. If you’re looking for a romantic drama with warmth, chemistry, or even a balanced erotic edge, this can come off as cold, repetitive, and punishing—especially given its depictions of coercion and violence. That said, if you’re open to stark, deliberately uncomfortable art-house cinema that prioritizes debate over pleasure, it’s uncompromising and certainly won’t be forgettable.
