Panic (2000)

Macy is superb as Alex, a hitman having a quiet, believable breakdown, and Henry Bromell’s writing gives every conversation a lived-in snap, letting the dark humor and real sadness sit in the same room without forcing either one. The vibe is offbeat and intimate rather than flashy: therapy sessions, tense family dinners, and small moments of connection that feel dangerous precisely because they’re sincere, with Neve Campbell and Tracey Ullman adding texture and bite. It’s not for viewers looking for nonstop action or a conventional gangster rush, but if you like crime dramas that are character-first, morally messy, and oddly moving, this one lingers.

Panic is aiming for a moody, off-kilter character study about a hitman’s midlife breakdown, using therapy and a risky connection to expose how family conditioning can rot you from the inside. The problem is the story often feels thinner than the atmosphere, with pacing so unhurried it can come off as listless rather than hypnotic, and the crime elements don’t deliver the propulsion you might expect from the premise. If you’re looking for a tight thriller with escalating tension and clever plotting, this may feel like it’s circling the same emotional drain for too long. That said, William H.
