Genius (1999)

Genius is the kind of family comedy that treats “being smart” not as a superpower, but as a complicated adolescence—awkward, yearning, and funny in the way real insecurity can be. It has a breezy Disney-era TV-movie charm, mixing campus fish-out-of-water laughs, a surprisingly sweet first-crush vibe, and just enough mad-science hockey mayhem to keep the energy skating forward. Trevor Morgan makes Charlie’s double-life dilemma feel sincere rather than smug, and the movie’s warmest trick is how it nudges him toward learning that reinvention isn’t the same as belonging. If you’re allergic to late-’90s TV-movie gloss or broad comedy beats, it may feel lightweight, but if you want an easygoing, good-hearted watch with a goofy high-concept hook, this one earns its crowd-pleasing grin.

Genius is clearly trying to be a light, feel-good Disney-style mashup of “kid prodigy wants to be normal” and underdog sports comedy, with a dash of teen crush awkwardness.
