Pokémon: The First Movie (1998)

Pokémon: The First Movie earns its place in pop-culture memory by taking a bright, kid-friendly adventure and sneaking in a surprisingly weighty question about identity, purpose, and what makes someone “real.” Director Kunihiko Yuyama keeps the pace lively and the animation charming, with Pikachu and company delivering that warm, Saturday-morning comfort while the action ramps up into a grand, stormy showdown that feels bigger than the TV series. It’s simple in the best way—clear emotions, clean momentum, and a few moments that land with genuine feeling rather than just noise and nostalgia. If you’re not already at least a little fond of Pokémon’s world, it may play like a straightforward franchise outing, but for anyone on the fence, it’s an easy, enjoyable watch that understands why these characters matter to people.

Pokémon: The First Movie is clearly trying to give the franchise a bigger, darker “what does it mean to be created?” story, with Mewtwo as a genuinely interesting, moody antagonist and a couple of sincere emotional beats aimed straight at kids. The problem is the movie often feels like an extended TV episode stretched to feature length: the pacing drags, the humor is thin, and if you’re not already fluent in Pokémon rules and faces, it can come off as noisy and oddly impenetrable. The action is frequent for a G-rated film, but it’s more repetitive battling than inventive adventure, and the storytelling can feel choppy rather than epic. If you’re a nostalgic fan or watching with children who love the characters, it’ll probably do the job; if you want a tight, witty family movie that stands on its own, this isn’t the one.
