Retro Puppetmaster (1999)

Retro Puppetmaster is the kind of scrappy, lore-hungry horror prequel that knows exactly what it wants to be: a midnight-movie fable where old-world Parisian romance and Egyptian occult menace collide in the warm glow of a stage spotlight. David DeCoteau leans into the series’ pulpy charm, letting the pleasure come from atmosphere—shadowy inns, ancient curses, and that deliciously macabre idea of “life” being smuggled into carved wood—rather than big-budget spectacle. Watching André Toulon take his first steps toward becoming the legend is genuinely satisfying, especially as the film builds a cozy, creepy vibe around the puppets’ birth and the relentless pressure of Sutekh’s servants closing in. If you want sleek scares, this isn’t it, but if you’re game for a throwback horror yarn with mythology, mood, and a fondness for the strange little monsters we can hold in our hands, it’s an easy ticket to punch.

Retro Puppetmaster wants to be an origin-story detour for Toulon, mixing pulpy Egyptian mysticism with early-1900s Paris atmosphere and a bit of franchise lore-building. The problem is it often feels like a low-budget, talky side chapter rather than a proper horror film, with thin tension, uneven pacing, and effects that rarely sell the menace you’re promised. Performances are serviceable but not strong enough to carry the quieter stretches, and if you’re here for inventive puppet kills or sustained dread, you may find yourself waiting. That said, if you’re a completionist or you enjoy scrappy, straight-to-video franchise entries with campy mythology and a few fun puppet moments, it can still scratch that niche itch.
