Demented (1980)

Demented is a grimy little slice of early-’80s exploitation that turns trauma into a feverish home-invasion nightmare, the kind of movie that traps you in a single, anxious headspace and refuses to let you breathe. Arthur Jeffreys leans hard into a paranoid, after-dark vibe—creaking rooms, masked figures, and the creeping sense that safety is just another story people tell themselves—while Sallee Young commits to a performance that’s raw, rattled, and strangely magnetic. It’s also the sort of thriller that plays like a pressure cooker: the more the people around her dismiss what she’s feeling, the more the film tightens its grip, building toward a lurid, revenge-tinged crescendo. Fair warning, the premise is rooted in sexual violence and the film is undeniably sleazy in that era-specific way, but if you can stomach the subject matter and want a nasty, tense, drive-in-style shocker, it delivers exactly that.
