The Guilty (2000)

What makes The Guilty quietly gripping is the way it takes a lurid premise and turns it into a tightening moral vise, where every bad decision echoes into the next and the tension comes less from gunplay than from consequences. Anthony Waller lets the story simmer before it starts snapping into place, and once it does, the movie becomes a twisty, increasingly unpredictable thriller that keeps shifting your sense of who has control. Bill Pullman is especially effective as a polished man with rot beneath the surface, while Devon Sawa brings an anxious vulnerability that gives the film a pulse beyond its mechanics. It’s not an easy watch given the sexual violence baked into the setup, but if you can stomach that and want a mid-budget crime drama that escalates smartly and lands with a satisfying sting, this one earns your attention.

The Guilty wants to be a slick, morally rotten thriller about power, guilt, and desperation spiraling out of control, with Bill Pullman leaning hard into the “respectable monster” role. The problem is it gets there through a lot of contrived turns and tangled coincidences that can feel more like the script pushing pieces around than characters making believable choices. If you’re sensitive to sexual assault as a plot catalyst, be warned: it’s central to the story and may make the whole ride feel grim rather than gripping. Still, if you can tolerate a slow, setup-heavy pace and you’re in the mood for a pulpy late-’90s/early-2000s crime drama with a few decent performances, it may scratch that trashy-thriller itch—just don’t expect tight plotting or subtlety.
