Gorgeous is the kind of sunny, crowd-pleasing Hong Kong romance that remembers movies can be athletic as well as swoony—one moment you’re laughing at the culture-clash comedy, the next you’re watching crisp, inventive fight choreography snap into place with real grace. Shu Qi gives Ah Bu a buoyant sincerity that makes her wide-eyed leap from a quiet fishing town to neon Hong Kong feel contagious, while Tony Leung adds that effortless movie-star spark that turns flirtation into electricity. Jackie Chan, in a refreshing change of pace, uses his persona like a secret ingredient—more charm-forward than usual, but still delivering the kinetic fun you came for. If you’re allergic to late-’90s rom-com sweetness, it may feel a little confectionary, but if you want a lighthearted adventure with genuine chemistry and action that actually delights, this one goes down easy.

Gorgeous is trying to be a breezy Jackie Chan-era rom-com adventure with a fairy-tale setup, sunny locations, and enough action to keep things moving. The problem is the story feels thin and stitched together, so the romance doesn’t land the way it wants to, and the chemistry can come off oddly muted for a movie that’s supposed to sparkle. Add uneven tone swings, distracting dubbing, and a score that can grate, and you may find yourself watching the ingredients rather than enjoying the meal.
