Osmosis Jones (2001)
A white blood cell policeman, with the help of a cold pill, must stop a deadly virus from destroying the human they live in, Frank.
What people think about Osmosis Jones
Osmosis Jones is the kind of high-concept family movie that feels like someone dared an action-comedy to take place inside the human body—and then actually made it work, with manic imagination to spare. The animated “city” of Frank’s insides is bursting with visual invention, turning germs, mucus, and immune cells into a lively world that moves like a buddy-cop adventure on fast-forward, powered by Chris Rock’s scrappy charm and David Hyde Pierce’s wonderfully fussy deadpan. It’s consistently funny in that gleefully gross, Saturday-afternoon way, while Laurence Fishburne’s silky-voiced villain gives the stakes a surprisingly sharp edge without tipping into nightmare fuel. Fair warning: the bodily humor is not subtle, but if you can meet it on its own messy terms, you’ll get an energetic, original ride that’s far smarter than its snot jokes have any right to be.
Osmosis Jones is trying to mash up a buddy-cop adventure inside the human body with a goofy live-action cautionary tale about bad habits, and on paper that’s a clever hook. The problem is the movie can’t decide who it’s for: the animated sections are energetic and imaginative, but the live-action stuff often feels sluggish, meaner-looking, and drenched in bodily-gross gags that can wear out their welcome fast. If you’re sensitive to vomit, zits, mucus, and generally “sticky” humor, or you want a clean, consistent family tone, this is likely going to annoy you more than amuse you. Still, Laurence Fishburne makes the villain genuinely fun to watch, and when the film stays animated, it has real visual creativity and a few sharp jokes.
