The Perfect Murder (1988)
Police Inspector Ghote lives a middle-class life in Bombay along with his wife, Pratima. He has been employed with the Bombay Police for many years. He is assigned to investigate the deadly assault on a Parsi man named Perfect, who is the Secretary of Lala Heera Lal, a wealthy man with underworld links. Inspector Ghote commences his investigation and is displeased when his superiors ask him to work with a Swedish Forensic Expert by the name of Axel Svennson.
What people think about The Perfect Murder
The Perfect Murder is that rare thriller that doesn’t just drop you into a mystery—it drops you into Bombay itself, alive with texture, noise, and everyday detail that makes the investigation feel grounded and immediate. At its center is Inspector Ghote, a working man with a stubborn conscience, whose case pulls him through a city of wealth, influence, and shadowy connections while the film quietly finds room for sly humor and human warmth. The clash between local instincts and an imported forensic “expert” adds a playful, fish-out-of-water tension that keeps the tone brisk without turning the story into a joke. If you like mysteries that prioritize atmosphere and character over glossy spectacle, this one is an entertaining, culturally rich ride; if you’re after nonstop action, it may feel more observational than explosive.
The Perfect Murder (1988) aims for a Bombay-set whodunit with a fish-out-of-water twist, pairing Inspector Ghote’s grounded police work with a flashy foreign forensic expert. The problem is the story often leans into contrivances that can feel more silly than suspenseful, and the pacing is so flat that the mystery rarely builds real tension. If you’re expecting a tight, clever thriller with sharp twists, this may come off like an oddly played spoof that doesn’t fully commit to being funny or serious. That said, if you enjoy old-school Indian crime setups, character-driven investigation, and don’t mind a meandering, occasionally absurd plot, you might still find it mildly watchable.
