Cherry Falls (2000)

Cherry Falls earns its cult reputation with a killer hook that flips the teen-slasher rulebook inside out: instead of punishing sex, it makes virginity the danger, and that single twist gives the movie a wicked, nervy energy. Geoffrey Wright leans into a sly, darkly comic tone that’s more mischievous than mean, letting the satire breathe even as the body count climbs and the tension stays sharp. Brittany Murphy is a terrific anchor—smart, reactive, and human—while the film keeps you guessing with a mystery thread that’s actually engaged with the town’s secrets, not just the next jump scare. It’s bloody, loud, and unabashedly R-rated, so it won’t be for everyone, but if you want a clever, subversive slasher that knows exactly what it’s doing, this is a surprisingly satisfying ride.

Cherry Falls is clearly trying to be a cheeky, post-Scream slasher that pokes at teen sex panic while still delivering a body count and a mystery. The premise is deliciously trashy and there are flashes of fun energy, with Brittany Murphy bringing likability that the movie frankly needs. But the tone wobbles between satire, horror, and outright silliness, and the editing and pacing can make big moments feel oddly rushed or weightless. If you want a tight, scary whodunit with a satisfying payoff, this may leave you annoyed; if you’re in the mood for a messy, early-2000s slasher curiosity with a wild hook, it’s passable.
