Lansky (1999)

What makes Lansky special is how it strips the gangster myth down to something colder and more human: a man on the run, taking inventory of the choices that built him and the world that now wants him erased. John McNaughton keeps the tone tough and unvarnished, letting the violence and ambition feel matter-of-fact rather than romantic, and that restraint gives the film an unsettling credibility. Richard Dreyfuss is terrific—sharp, weary, and quietly calculating—while the dialogue has a blunt, everyday snap that makes even famous mob names sound like people you might overhear at the next table. It’s not a flashy, swaggering crime saga, but if you want a grounded character portrait that treats organized crime as a life with consequences instead of a costume, this one lingers.

Lansky is clearly aiming for a reflective, late-in-life gangster memoir, using exile and memory to humanize Meyer Lansky rather than just glamorize the legend. The problem is it often feels like a checklist of formative moments instead of a story with real momentum, so the pacing can drag and the character insights stay frustratingly surface-level. Richard Dreyfuss brings some gravitas and there are a few evocative period flashes, but the film’s TV-movie sheen and muted tension make it more “competent recounting” than gripping crime drama. If you want a sharp, propulsive mob saga or a psychologically deep character study, this may feel underwhelming; it’s better suited to viewers who don’t mind a slower, lighter-touch biographical sketch.
