Cecil B. Demented (2000)

Cecil B. Demented is John Waters at his most gleefully unhinged: a punk-rock valentine to movies that also takes a flamethrower to Hollywood vanity, celebrity worship, and the idea of “good taste.” It barrels forward with giddy, anarchic energy, stacking outrageous set pieces and razor-edged satire until you’re laughing and slightly scandalized at the same time, with Melanie Griffith gamefully weaponizing her star persona and Stephen Dorff radiating messianic-maniac conviction. The vibe is loud, trashy, and defiantly pro-cinema—like a midnight-movie riot where every joke is also a love letter to the medium. It’s not for the squeamish or the easily offended, but if you enjoy transgressive comedy and want a film that feels alive, dangerous, and shamelessly funny, this one earns its cult reputation.

Cecil B. Demented is John Waters trying to torch Hollywood hypocrisy with a loud, anarchic love letter to underground filmmaking, and the premise is genuinely inspired. The problem is it often plays like a string of skits held together by duct tape—deliberately messy, but also sloppy in a way that can feel underwritten rather than punk. If you don’t enjoy aggressive camp, crude sexual humor, and chaotic “shock for shock’s sake” energy (including kidnapping and lots of mayhem), this will feel more exhausting than edgy. That said, Melanie Griffith gamely leans into the satire, and if you’re already fluent in Waters’ taste for tastelessness, the film’s gleeful anti-establishment spirit may be exactly your kind of headache.
