Light It Up (1999)

Light It Up is clearly trying to be a tense, socially conscious pressure-cooker about neglected schools, broken systems, and how fast a bad day can spiral into tragedy. The problem is the script often pushes emotions so hard it starts to feel manufactured, with dialogue and turns of events that can come off more like a TV movie “message” than a credible thriller. Once the standoff is underway, it also becomes fairly predictable, so if you’re coming for sharp suspense and airtight realism, you may end up rolling your eyes instead of gripping the armrest. Still, Forest Whitaker brings needed humanity, and the film’s anger comes from a sincere place—just know it plays more as a blunt cautionary drama than a nuanced, edge-of-your-seat thriller.
