Jan de Bont stages the scares as big, baroque set pieces, letting towering architecture, moving statues, and shadowy visual effects do the heavy lifting while Liam Neeson, Lili Taylor, and Catherine Zeta-Jones keep the human tension simmering inside all that spectacle. The vibe is less slow-burn psychological dread and more theme-park haunted mansion brought to glossy life: ominous, imaginative, and constantly in motion. If you want subtle chills and ambiguity, this may feel too loud, but if you’re on the fence and crave a high-production, gothic thrill ride, it’s an easy ticket to punch.
