Gun Shy (2000)

Gun Shy has the rare courage to make its action hero human: Liam Neeson plays a legendary DEA undercover agent whose toughest enemy isn’t the mob, but the panic that creeps in after one job goes wrong, and the movie finds surprising comedy and tenderness in that crack in the armor. Eric Blakeney’s script keeps the tension humming while letting character carry the thrills, giving Sandra Bullock room to be warm, funny, and disarmingly sincere, and Oliver Platt a deliciously volatile menace who can turn a scene on a dime. The vibe is a smart, slightly off-kilter cocktail of crime suspense, romantic odd-couple charm, and therapy-group absurdity—more character-driven than shoot-’em-up, but still wired with danger. It’s not for everyone if you want pure, straight-faced thriller intensity, yet if you like your genre films with wit, heart, and an ensemble that feels like it’s actually enjoying the ride, this one’s an easy recommendation.

Gun Shy is clearly aiming for a jittery mash-up of undercover-crime thriller and therapy-group comedy, with Liam Neeson playing against type as a tough guy whose nerves (and stomach) have betrayed him. The problem is it rarely commits to one lane, lurching between mob tension and low-brow bathroom gags, so the pacing feels choppy and the jokes can land with a thud. If you’re allergic to crude humor, dated “shock” punchlines, or a script that can’t decide whether it wants you anxious or amused, this will test your patience fast. That said, Neeson, Sandra Bullock, and Oliver Platt do what they can, and if you’re specifically in the mood for an oddball, R-rated crime farce that’s more goofy than clever, you might get a few guilty laughs.
