Anna and the King (1999)

Anna and the King is the kind of old-fashioned, big-canvas romantic drama Hollywood hardly makes anymore: lavish, sincere, and built around two stars who can hold a scene with nothing but a look. Andy Tennant stages Siam as a living storybook of color and texture—gorgeous cinematography, opulent costumes, and production design so rich you can practically feel the heat in the palace corridors—while Jodie Foster brings steel and warmth to Anna’s intelligence and conviction. But it’s Chow Yun-Fat who makes the film linger, a magnetic, majestic King whose authority and vulnerability create a slow-burn chemistry that’s more about restraint and respect than swooning declarations. Be aware it has PG-13 intensity and a stately, deliberate pace, yet if you’re in the mood for sweeping historical romance with real emotional weight, this one earns your time.

Anna and the King is clearly aiming for a sweeping, old-school romantic epic with political stakes, cultural clash, and a prestige-drama sheen—and it does look lush, with Chow Yun-Fat bringing real dignity and quiet magnetism to the King. The problem is it’s a long sit, and the storytelling often feels dutiful rather than gripping, with pacing that drifts and emotional beats that can land as polished schmaltz instead of genuine heat. Jodie Foster is committed, but the script keeps the relationship at arm’s length, so if you’re expecting a passionate romance or sharp historical drama, you may find it tastefully dull. If you like ornate costumes, court intrigue in soft focus, and a restrained, almost museum-like melodrama, it’ll go down fine; if you need momentum and bite, your patience will be tested.
