Held Up (1999)

Held Up is the kind of scrappy, sunbaked comedy that wins you over on sheer momentum: one lousy decision, one cruel twist of fate, and suddenly Jamie Foxx is sprinting through a day that keeps finding new ways to embarrass him. Steve Rash keeps the pace brisk and the tone breezy, turning a desert detour and a convenience-store standoff into a polished little pressure cooker where Foxx’s charm does the heavy lifting and Nia Long adds just enough sting and spark to make the romantic fallout feel real. It’s broad, a bit rowdy, and very late-’90s in its PG-13 edge—language, gun threats, and a few raunchy beats included—so it won’t be for anyone craving subtlety. But if you’re on the fence and want a pleasant, fish-out-of-water farce that doesn’t pretend to be more than a good time, this one delivers more laughs than its reputation suggests.
