Anna Magdalena (1998)
Two young men fall for the woman staying upstairs when she practises J.S. Bach's "Notebook for Anna Magdalena".
What people think about Anna Magdalena
Anna Magdalena is the kind of romantic comedy that sneaks up on you: light on its feet, gently melancholy at the edges, and carried along by music the way a good memory is carried by a familiar tune. Kenneth Yee frames the story like a piece of Bach—four “movements” that let the love triangle breathe, shift, and surprise without resorting to cheap twists, while Takeshi Kaneshiro, Kelly Chen, and Aaron Kwok give it an easy charm that feels lived-in rather than performed. Peter Pau’s cinematography doesn’t just make Hong Kong look beautiful; it makes the characters’ longing visible, culminating in camera work so fluid it feels like the film itself is dancing. If you want big, declarative romance, this may seem too wistful and offbeat, but if you’re open to something cute, a little sad, and quietly inventive, it’s a small gem worth your time.
Anna Magdalena is clearly aiming for a light, music-soaked rom-com with a “classical piece” structure, using Bach and a four-movement format to turn a simple love triangle into something more playful and artsy. The problem is it often feels like the movie is trying on clever stylistic tricks without fully committing, so the tone wobbles between sweet, quirky, and oddly heightened fantasy, and the pacing can sag just when you want it to glide. If you need romantic comedies to have a steady rhythm and clean emotional build, this one may test your patience. But if you’re in the mood for late-90s Hong Kong charm, attractive leads, and a gentle, music-forward vibe where the mood matters more than the plot mechanics, it can still be a pleasant, if uneven, listen.
