DMX and Nas bring a raw, lived-in authenticity to two friends riding the same wave in opposite emotional directions, and the film’s best scenes don’t so much explain the hood as let you breathe its tension, swagger, and paranoia. It’s stylish to the point of intoxication, with imagery that sticks in your head long after the credits, even when the storytelling plays more like a fever dream than a tightly wound plot. If you want a clean, conventional gangster narrative this may frustrate you—but if you’re on the fence and crave atmosphere, attitude, and visual ambition in full blast, Belly is absolutely worth the ride.

Belly is clearly trying to be a gritty, stylish street epic about loyalty, ambition, and the moment you realize the life you’re living is a dead end. Hype Williams brings undeniable visual flair and a heavy, music-video atmosphere that can feel hypnotic, especially if you’re here for the mood, the soundtrack energy, and the late-’90s hip-hop presence of DMX and Nas. The problem is the storytelling often feels thin and muddled, with uneven acting and a plot that drifts or repeats instead of building real momentum, so you may end up admiring scenes more than caring about what happens in them. If you want a tight crime drama with sharp character work and coherent escalation, this may frustrate you, but if you’re open to a style-first, vibe-driven time capsule, it has its own appeal.
