Faithless (2000)

Faithless is what happens when a familiar premise—an affair—gets stripped of melodrama and examined with surgical honesty, turning into a haunting meditation on desire, guilt, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. Scripted by Ingmar Bergman and directed with bracing clarity by Liv Ullmann, the film has the intimate, confessional feel of a memory you can’t quite escape, where every conversation lands like a moral reckoning rather than a plot point. Lena Endre is extraordinary at capturing the push and pull of self-justification and self-disgust, while the supporting performances deepen the ache instead of underlining it. It’s not a cozy romance and it doesn’t offer easy comfort—this is an emotionally rigorous, adult drama—but if you want cinema that trusts your intelligence and dares you to look straight at human contradiction, it’s hard to shake.

Faithless is aiming for a raw, Bergman-style autopsy of adultery and guilt, framed as a story being “summoned” and interrogated by an aging artist, which gives it an intimate, confessional sting. But it’s also long, chilly, and relentlessly serious, with a self-conscious, literary structure that can feel more like being trapped in someone’s private therapy session than watching a drama unfold. If you want romance, catharsis, or even a bit of warmth, this will likely feel punishing—especially with its explicit sexual content and emotional cruelty. That said, Lena Endre delivers a committed, complex performance and Liv Ullmann keeps the mood controlled and elegant, so if you’re in the mood for austere, talk-heavy psychological suffering, it does exactly what it sets out to do.
