Aleksei German stages terror as grotesque daily theater, blending savage political satire with a hypnotic, lived-in atmosphere where every hallway, face, and shouted order seems to carry the weight of a whole regime. It’s often darkly funny in the way despair can be funny, but the laughter catches in your throat as the film closes in on a man being ground down by suspicion, bureaucracy, and brute force. Fair warning: it’s deliberately chaotic, punishingly intense, and includes harrowing sexual violence—yet for viewers willing to surrender to its strange rhythm, it’s an ambitious, haunting masterpiece that lingers like a bruise.

The problem is it’s intentionally opaque: scenes blur together, characters and motivations slip out of focus, and the movie often seems to dare you to keep up rather than guide you, which can feel more exhausting than enlightening. It’s also long and punishing, with degrading violence and a brutal assault that’s not remotely “background” material, so this is a bad pick if you’re sensitive to that or just want a coherent historical drama.
