Taxi (1998)
In Marseilles a skilled pizza delivery boy Daniel who drives a scooter finally has his dreams come true. He gets a taxi license. Caught by the police for a huge speed infraction, he will help Emilien, a loser inspector who can't drive, on the track of German bank robbers, so he doesn't lose his license and his dream job.
What people think about Taxi
What makes Taxi (1998) such a rush is how it treats the streets of Marseilles like a playground for pure cinematic momentum—part action movie, part buddy comedy, all throttle. Gérard Pirès keeps the pace breathless, stitching together spectacular chases with punchy humor and the kind of easy chemistry between Samy Naceri’s fearless driver and Frédéric Diefenthal’s hopelessly outmatched cop that makes every scene feel like it’s grinning at you. It’s slick, loud, and joyfully unapologetic about being entertainment first, with Marion Cotillard adding a spark of charm amid the chaos. If you want gritty realism, look elsewhere—but if you want a fast, funny, crowd-pleasing ride that never forgets to have fun, this one earns its reputation.
Taxi (1998) is trying to be a slick, high-octane buddy action-comedy where car chases do the heavy lifting and the banter keeps things light. When it’s in motion, it’s genuinely fun—there’s real energy in the driving sequences and a playful, cartoonish tone that can still hit if you like late-’90s European action. But the story is thin and predictable, the direction rarely elevates the material, and the humor can feel dated, with some moments that flirt with sexist undertones. If you’re looking for sharp writing or memorable characters, this probably won’t satisfy; if you just want fast cars, broad laughs, and a breezy crime caper, it does exactly that.
