Claire Dolan is special because it looks at a life most movies exploit and instead treats it with a bracing, humane seriousness—watching, listening, and refusing to flatter us with easy explanations. Lodge Kerrigan’s direction is austere and quietly stylish, and Katrin Cartlidge gives a performance that feels lived-in rather than performed, making Claire’s grief and determination register in small, devastating shifts. The film’s vibe is intimate and observant, more like being placed in the room with someone trying to reinvent herself than being led through a neatly packaged “redemption” story. It’s not for everyone—there’s explicit sexual content and it can feel emotionally raw and unresolved—but if you’re on the fence and want a drama that trusts your intelligence and lingers in the mind, this one is quietly shattering.

Claire Dolan is clearly aiming for a raw, unglamorous character study about a woman trying to claw her way out of exploitation and into some kind of self-determined life. The problem is that Lodge Kerrigan’s detached, clinical approach can feel less like “subtle” and more like you’re watching through thick glass—lots of bleak situations, not enough emotional access to make them land. It’s also sexually explicit in a matter-of-fact way that’s meant to underline the grind of the work, but if you’re not on board with severe sex/nudity in a serious drama, it’ll feel punishing rather than illuminating. If you like austere indie films that prioritize mood and realism over catharsis, there’s value here—Katrin Cartlidge is committed—but if you need momentum, warmth, or a satisfying emotional payoff, this one may leave you cold.
