Anywhere but Here (1999)

Anywhere but Here is special because it treats a mother-daughter story with the sweep of a road movie and the intimacy of a confession, letting comedy and heartbreak share the same breath. Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman are electric together—Sarandon’s Adele is all restless charm and bad ideas, Portman’s Ann is tightly wound ambition—and their push-pull feels so lived-in you stop watching “characters” and start recognizing people. The Beverly Hills dreamscape gives the film a glossy, slightly bittersweet vibe, but it never loses sight of the real stakes: love that’s messy, loyalty that’s tested, and the quiet cost of growing up. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to flawed, impulsive protagonists, but if you want a smart, emotionally honest drama with wit and warmth, it’s a deeply satisfying ride.

Anywhere but Here is clearly aiming for a heartfelt, funny mother-daughter road-to-reinvention story, with big emotions and an aspirational Beverly Hills backdrop. The problem is it takes its sweet time getting there: the plot feels a bit stretched and undercooked, so scenes can drag even when the performances are doing their best to keep you invested. It also slips into familiar melodrama and fairly predictable turns, which can make the “journey” feel less earned than intended. If you’re in the mood for a character-driven dramedy powered by strong leads, you’ll find plenty to like, but if you need tight pacing and sharper storytelling, this may test your patience.
