Simply Irresistible (1999)
After her mother's death, mediocre chef Amanda Shelton is having trouble attracting customers to her family's restaurant. While shopping for ingredients, she is given a magical crab by mysterious Gene O'Reilly. Afterward, Amanda's dishes suddenly become excellent, inducing strong emotional reactions in everyone who eats them. Tom Bartlett, who is preparing to open his own eatery, tries her cooking and falls in love.
What people think about Simply Irresistible
Simply Irresistible is the kind of airy romantic fantasy that doesn’t try to outsmart you—it tries to enchant you, and with its warm, old-fashioned sincerity, it often does. Sarah Michelle Gellar makes Amanda’s grief and hope feel real even as the movie sprinkles in whimsical magic, using food as a love language that turns emotions into something you can practically taste. The vibe is light, cozy, and knowingly cute, with just enough fairy-tale logic to let you relax into the romance and enjoy the gentle comedy along the way. If you need hard realism or sharp-edged humor, it may feel too sweet and obvious, but if you’re in the mood for a charming date-night confection, this one goes down easy.
Simply Irresistible is clearly aiming for a light, whimsical rom-com where food is basically a love potion and grief turns into sweetness, and that’s a perfectly fine goal. The problem is the execution: the “magic” feels oddly flat, the dialogue is clunky, and the romance leans more on the premise than on believable chemistry or sharp writing to sell it. Sarah Michelle Gellar has charm and there are a few cozy, comfort-movie moments, but the tone never quite becomes enchanting enough to justify how thin everything else is. If you want a genuinely magical romantic fantasy, you’ll likely find this bland and forgettable; if you’re content with a soft, PG-13, late-’90s fluff watch, it may go down easily.
