Big Daddy (1999)

Big Daddy works because it takes Adam Sandler’s slacker persona and lets it collide with something real: a small kid who needs stability, whether the grown-up in the room is ready or not. The movie’s comedy is proudly juvenile—PG-13 crude jokes, bad influence antics, and New York hangout energy—but it’s anchored by a surprisingly tender bond between Sonny and Julian that sneaks up on you and earns its warmth. Sandler is at his most likable here, and the film knows exactly when to coast on laughs and when to slow down for a beat of genuine feeling without turning syrupy. If you’re allergic to potty humor, it may test your patience, but if you want a crowd-pleasing comedy with an unexpectedly big heart, this one still delivers.

Big Daddy is trying to mash up Adam Sandler’s slacker-raunch comedy with a sincere “man finally grows up” story, and on paper that’s a perfectly watchable crowd-pleaser. The problem is the movie can’t always decide what it wants to be, bouncing from crude, juvenile bits to syrupy heart-tugging moments in a way that can feel manipulative rather than earned. If you’re put off by an adult lead making reckless choices with a kid for laughs, or you hate predictable, formulaic arcs, this will probably irritate you more than it charms you. Still, Sandler and the Sprouse twins have an easy chemistry, and when the film slows down and lets the relationship breathe, it lands a few genuinely sweet notes.
