Cruel Intentions (1999)
Slaking a thirst for dangerous games, Kathryn challenges her stepbrother, Sebastian, to deflower their headmaster's daughter before the summer ends. If he succeeds, the prize is the chance to bed Kathryn. But if he loses, Kathryn will claim his most prized possession.
What people think about Cruel Intentions
Cruel Intentions is a wickedly entertaining little ice sculpture of a movie: glossy, sharp-edged, and surprisingly smart about how power and desire get traded like currency among the privileged. Roger Kumble’s update of Dangerous Liaisons turns Manhattan prep-school glamour into a battleground, and the fun is in watching the chess moves—seduction as strategy, romance as a dare—play out with merciless wit. Sarah Michelle Gellar is electric as the icily composed Kathryn, Ryan Phillippe brings swagger with a crack of vulnerability, and Reese Witherspoon gives the film a beating heart that keeps it from collapsing into pure cynicism. It’s not for everyone—there’s plenty of sexual provocation and mean-spirited games—but if you’re in the mood for a darkly delicious, late-’90s drama that knows exactly how sharp its smile is, it pays off.
Cruel Intentions is aiming for a slick, modern-day morality play about privilege, manipulation, and desire, dressed up as a sexy teen cat-and-mouse game. The problem is that beneath the provocative setup, it can feel shallow and a bit exploitative, like it’s more interested in watching pretty people behave badly than saying anything sharp about it. Performances are uneven and the script leans hard on shock and melodrama, so if you’re allergic to glossy late-’90s cynicism and underage sexual scheming played for thrills, this will likely irritate you. That said, if you want a trashy, stylish time capsule with a few genuinely juicy scenes and a committed mean-girl energy from Sarah Michelle Gellar, it can still be entertaining on those terms.
