The Astronaut's Wife (1999)
When astronaut Spencer Armacost returns to Earth after a mission that nearly cost him his life, he decides to take a desk job in order to see his beautiful wife, Jillian, more often. Gradually, Jillian notices that Spencer's personality seems to have changed, but her concerns fade when she discovers that she's pregnant. As Jillian grows closer to becoming a mother, her suspicions about Spencer return. Why does it seem as if he's a different person?
What people think about The Astronaut's Wife
The Astronaut’s Wife is the kind of sleek, late-’90s thriller that gets under your skin not with jump scares, but with the slow, unnerving feeling that something in a marriage has gone subtly, terribly off. Charlize Theron anchors the film with a performance that’s all intuition and mounting dread, making you lean in as the everyday rhythms of domestic life start to feel like a trap, while Johnny Depp plays the returning astronaut with an eerie restraint that keeps you guessing. The direction leans into moody, polished visuals and a simmering sci-fi paranoia, giving the story a glossy, nocturnal vibe that’s easy to sink into. It doesn’t always fulfill every promise of its premise, but if you like atmospheric psychological suspense with strong leads and a creeping sense of the uncanny, it’s absolutely worth the ride.
The Astronaut’s Wife is clearly aiming for a classy, slow-burn paranoia thriller about marriage, pregnancy, and the fear that the person you love has come back wrong. The problem is it moves at a crawl and leans on clunky dialogue and familiar sci-fi beats, so the tension rarely earns its keep and the mystery can feel more like a rerun than a revelation. If you need sharp writing, escalating suspense, or a genuinely fresh hook, this will likely feel like a wasted setup. That said, Charlize Theron sells the unease well, and if you enjoy glossy late-’90s atmosphere and don’t mind a derivative, deliberately paced thriller, you might still get something out of it.
