Arlington Road (1999)

Arlington Road is the kind of smart, nerve-tightening thriller that makes ordinary suburban streets feel like a trap you can’t quite see until it’s too late. Mark Pellington builds dread with a Hitchcockian patience, letting small, plausible details stack up until paranoia starts to feel like the only rational response, and Jeff Bridges plays that unraveling with bruised humanity rather than action-hero swagger. Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack are disarmingly “normal” in the way that keeps you leaning forward, second-guessing every smile and neighborly gesture. It’s a bleak, unsettling ride—especially in its refusal to offer easy comfort—so it may not be for viewers who want a tidy moral resolution, but if you crave suspense that lingers after the credits, this one delivers.

Arlington Road is trying to be a slow-burn, suburban paranoia thriller that asks how well you really know the people next door, and it largely succeeds at building a creeping sense of unease thanks to solid performances from Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins. The problem is the movie increasingly relies on contrivances and “just go with it” plotting, so if you need airtight logic and fair-play mystery clues, you may find yourself rolling your eyes as it ramps up.
