The Spiral (1998)

What makes The Spiral special is that it refuses to simply reheat Ring’s scares; it treats the curse like a mystery to be dissected, turning a familiar nightmare into an unsettling, idea-driven thriller. Seen through the cool, clinical eyes of a pathologist, the film has a chilling vibe of dread-by-investigation—less jumpy, more creeping—where every clue feels like it might be contaminated. Koichi Sato and Miki Nakatani ground the strange material with committed, serious performances, helping the movie’s provocative concepts land even when the mood turns abstract. It’s slower and more cerebral than its predecessor, so it may not satisfy viewers craving nonstop shocks, but if you like horror that lingers because it has something unsettling to say, this is a fascinating companion piece worth your time.

The Spiral is clearly trying to expand the Ring mythology into a more investigative, almost medical mystery with bigger supernatural ideas and a darker, weirder tone. The problem is it often feels like a rough draft of a great sequel: the pacing drags, the editing can be awkward, and the cheaper production values blunt the dread that made Ring so effective. If you’re coming for that same clean, creeping escalation and polished scares, this may feel disappointing and oddly assembled. But if you’re a completionist or you enjoy offbeat franchise detours that lean into lore and unsettling concepts over slick execution, there’s enough atmosphere and ambition here to justify a watch.
