Scream 3 (2000)

Wes Craven keeps the series’ self-aware wit sharp while ratcheting up the backstage-mystery vibe, letting the Stab 3 movie set feel like a funhouse where every hallway and soundstage could hide a mask. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette bring a lived-in warmth to the chaos, so the laughs and the scares land with the comfort of familiar faces and the sting of real jeopardy. It’s a bit glossier and more showbiz than the earlier films, so if you want pure, mean-spirited terror this may not be your favorite—but if you’re on the fence, it’s an entertaining, brisk, surprisingly satisfying capper that knows how to say goodbye with a grin and a shiver.

Scream 3 is clearly trying to send the series up one more level by dragging Ghostface into Hollywood and poking at the ugliness behind the movie machine, and on paper that’s a smart playground for Wes Craven. The problem is it often feels like the franchise is running on fumes here: the pacing lumbers, the new suspects are thinly sketched, and the meta jokes start leaning on the same slasher beats the earlier films were better at skewering. If you’re coming for sharp suspense and a tightly constructed mystery, this one can feel noisier than scary and more “obligatory sequel” than inspired. Still, the core trio’s chemistry is reliable, there are a few entertaining set pieces, and if you’re a completionist or just want a lighter, more soap-operatic Scream in a glossier setting, you may have a perfectly decent time.
