The Faculty (1998)

The Faculty is that rare genre cocktail that actually goes down smooth: a slick, funny, genuinely tense sci-fi horror ride that turns the everyday dread of high school into something deliciously paranoid. Robert Rodriguez directs with propulsive energy and a mischievous grin, while Kevin Williamson’s script snaps with clever, self-aware dialogue that respects the classics it’s riffing on without feeling smug. The young cast clicks as a scrappy ensemble, making the scares land harder because the characters feel like real teens with real grudges and loyalties, not just bodies waiting for a jump cut. It’s an R-rated, late-’90s blast—bloody, loud, and occasionally crude—so if you want subtle horror, look elsewhere, but if you want a smart crowd-pleaser with teeth, this one earns its cult love.

The Faculty is trying to mash up Invasion of the Body Snatchers paranoia with slick late-’90s teen-movie attitude, and on that level it’s a fun, pulpy “who’s infected?” ride. The problem is it wears its influences so loudly that if you’ve seen even a couple of alien-infiltration thrillers, a lot of the beats feel familiar and the suspense can flatten out. It also sticks to a fairly tight group of characters, so if you want a bigger world or deeper emotional stakes, it may feel a bit thin and occasionally sluggish between the set pieces. Still, Rodriguez brings energy, the cast is likable, and the creature/genre moments land—just don’t go in expecting originality or subtlety; go in expecting a glossy, violent, profanity-heavy B-movie with a high-school filter.
