Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar (1999)

Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar is a big, boisterous slice of live-action comic-book fun, the kind that commits to its own silliness with such confidence you can’t help but go along for the ride. Claude Zidi fills ancient Gaul with bright, storybook production design, slapstick skirmishes, and a playful sense of anachronism, while Christian Clavier’s quick-witted Astérix and Gérard Depardieu’s warmly hulking Obélix make a classic odd-couple engine that keeps the comedy moving even when the Romans get serious. Roberto Benigni adds a deliciously slippery villain energy, and the whole film has that family-adventure vibe where the jokes land broadly but the world feels lived-in and exuberant. It’s not for everyone—there are moments that edge surprisingly dark for a “kids’” fantasy and the English dub can be a bit coarse—but if you want a lively, old-school European crowd-pleaser with heart, mischief, and cartoonish spectacle, this is an easy yes.

Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar is clearly trying to turn the beloved comics into a big, colorful live-action romp with broad slapstick, cartoonish action, and that underdog-village energy. The problem is the pacing can feel lumpy and the humor is very hit-or-miss, leaning heavily on mugging and noisy gags that may test your patience if you’re not already fond of the characters. It also has a surprisingly mean edge for a “family” adventure, with darker moments (including animal peril) that can clash with the otherwise playful tone. If you want a light, faithful, kid-friendly fantasy comedy, you may find this rough around the edges—but Depardieu’s warmth as Obelix and the sheer silliness of the world do offer some charm if you’re in the right mood.
