The Crow: Salvation (2000)
Alex Corvis, a man wrongly executed for the murder of his girlfriend, returns from the dead and sets out to find the real killer.
What people think about The Crow: Salvation
The Crow: Salvation is the rare sequel that earns its stripes by feeling leaner, meaner, and more street-level—a grim fairy tale of injustice and retribution that trades glossy myth for a bruised, low-budget immediacy. Bharat Nalluri builds a nocturnal vibe that’s equal parts horror and hardboiled thriller, letting the supernatural elements simmer under a propulsive, clue-chasing revenge engine that keeps tightening its grip. Eric Mabius brings a wounded, determined intensity to Alex Corvis, and the film’s best pleasures come from the way it periodically wrong-foots you, revealing new angles without turning into a mere rerun of the original’s beats. It’s undeniably nasty—violent, sleazy in places, and steeped in cruelty—so it won’t be for everyone, but if you want a dark, surprisingly involving Crow entry with momentum and bite, this one delivers.
The Crow: Salvation is clearly trying to recapture the franchise’s moody, revenge-from-beyond hook with a wrongfully executed lead, corrupt cops, and a grimy supernatural edge. The problem is it plays like a checklist of Crow beats without the style or emotional punch to make them feel earned, and the acting and dialogue often land with a thud rather than menace. The violence is frequent and nasty (including a disturbing execution and sexual sleaze), so if you’re not already committed to gritty late-90s/early-2000s direct-to-video energy, it can feel like a lot of noise for not much payoff. Still, if you’re a completionist or you just want a straightforward, mean-spirited revenge thriller with a gothic veneer, there are a few pulpy moments that might scratch that itch.
