Instinct is the kind of intelligent, actor-driven thriller that hooks you not with cheap shocks, but with the slow, unsettling thrill of watching two formidable minds circle each other. Anthony Hopkins gives Ethan Powell a feral, wounded gravity that’s impossible to look away from, while Cuba Gooding Jr. brings urgency and heart to a young psychiatrist whose ambition turns into something riskier: compassion. Jon Turteltaub keeps the pacing tight and the atmosphere claustrophobic, letting the institutional cruelty and moral questions seep in until you feel the walls closing around everyone onscreen. It’s not for viewers craving nonstop action or tidy answers, but if you like dramas that challenge your instincts about justice, sanity, and what “civilized” really means, this one stays with you.

Instinct wants to be a thoughtful, humanistic thriller about what “civilization” does to people, using a psychiatrist–patient chess match to explore trauma, morality, and institutional cruelty. The problem is it often feels like it’s pushing buttons rather than earning emotions: the plot turns are pretty easy to see coming, and the script leans into hokey, contrived beats that undercut the serious themes. Anthony Hopkins brings gravitas and Cuba Gooding Jr. has sincere energy, but even they can’t fully disguise how manipulative and tidy the storytelling can get. If you’re here for a nuanced psychological drama, you may roll your eyes; if you just want a mid-budget ’90s moral thriller with strong actors and a straightforward message, it’s serviceable.
