Elizabeth (1998)

Elizabeth is the rare historical drama that moves like a political thriller, turning court etiquette into a pressure cooker where every smile could be a knife. Shekhar Kapur gives the film a vivid, tactile style—mud, silk, candlelight, and danger all sharing the same air—so the era doesn’t feel museum-quiet, it feels alive and urgent. At the center is Cate Blanchett, incandescent as a young ruler learning, in real time, what power costs; her Elizabeth isn’t a marble icon but a beating heart forced into armor, with Geoffrey Rush’s watchful Walsingham adding a chilling, intelligent edge to the intrigue. It’s not for everyone if you want a strictly reverent, classroom-faithful biopic, and the R-rated violence and sexuality can be bracing, but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of film that makes history feel like it’s happening to you.

Elizabeth is clearly aiming for a bold, operatic origin story of a young ruler hardening into a legend, and Cate Blanchett’s performance largely delivers the intelligence and steel the material needs. The catch is that Shekhar Kapur stages it with a very loud, showy style—restless camerawork, punchy editing, and a blaring score that can feel like it’s pushing you to feel things rather than letting the drama earn them. The pacing and construction can also make the politics seem more like a highlight reel of crises and betrayals than a clean, coherent rise, so if you want a measured, historically grounded court drama, this may frustrate you. If you’re happy with a slick, intense, sometimes sensational take on history with strong lead acting and memorable imagery, it’s still an engaging watch.
