What people think about Election
Election is one of those comedies that’s secretly a scalpel: it takes the supposedly harmless world of high school and reveals, with wicked precision, how power, ego, and resentment really work. Alexander Payne’s tone is bright and breezy on the surface, but the laughs come with a sting, driven by razor-sharp writing and a political satire that feels uncomfortably timeless. Reese Witherspoon is phenomenal as Tracy Flick—so relentlessly ambitious you’ll admire her and want to run from her in the same breath—while Matthew Broderick turns quiet frustration into a slow-motion moral collapse you can’t look away from. It’s not for everyone if you want warmhearted teen nostalgia, but if you like smart, darkly funny stories that trust you to squirm and laugh at the same time, this is a must.
Election is trying to be a razor-sharp satire about ambition, hypocrisy, and the petty power games adults and teens play in a “harmless” school election, and it mostly succeeds by being uncomfortably honest. The catch is that the humor is deliberately mean-spirited and cringe-inducing, with characters who make selfish choices you’re not meant to excuse, so if you want likable people or a warm teen comedy, this will feel sour fast. It also leans into unsettling sexual misconduct in the backstory and some darker adult frustration, which can make the laughs feel more like a wince than a release. If you’re up for a smart, cynical, tightly acted takedown of small-town morality (Witherspoon is especially electric), it’s great; if you’re sensitive to secondhand embarrassment or moral murkiness, skip it.
