Pecker (1998)

Pecker is John Waters at his most inviting: a warm, wickedly funny valentine to Baltimore oddballs that still carries his sharp little stiletto of satire. It turns a teenager’s accidental rise as a photographer into a sly, surprisingly cogent riff on who gets to call something “art,” and how fame can chew up the very people it claims to celebrate, all without losing its affection for the misfits in the frame. Edward Furlong and Christina Ricci give the movie a sweet, lived-in center, while Waters keeps the vibe bright, trashy, and strangely wholesome—like a postcard from a city the culture vultures can’t quite understand. If you want the filthiest edge of Waters, this is comparatively mainstream, but if you’re on the fence, that accessibility is exactly why this one sneaks up on you and wins you over.

Pecker is John Waters trying to bottle his usual outsider-loving mischief into a sweeter, more mainstream fable about sudden fame, art-world hypocrisy, and what happens when your “real life” becomes someone else’s spectacle. The problem is that the comedy can feel oddly tame and sometimes just sits there, with stretches that play more like a parable than a laugh machine, and the rise-and-fall arc sags when it should be getting sharper. If you’re coming for the truly anarchic Waters of his earlier work, you may find this one too polite and a bit flat. But if you like offbeat Baltimore flavor, a gentle satirical bite, and a sincere affection for weird families—even when the jokes don’t always land—it can still be a breezy, quirky watch.
