The Heroine (1973)

The Heroine (1973) has that scrappy, street-level energy that makes early Hong Kong action-crime films feel alive: lean, blunt, and oddly charming even when it’s rough around the edges. It kicks off with a simple, high-stakes mistake and then keeps tightening the screws, pairing a hunted everyman cabbie with a no-nonsense policewoman whose toughness gives the film its spine and its swagger. There’s an experimental, anything-can-happen vibe to the staging and pacing, and for Jackie Chan fans it’s a rewarding glimpse of an early chapter before the legend fully crystallized. It won’t be for everyone if you need polished craftsmanship or modern rhythm, but if you like gritty vintage crime chases with personality, it’s an enjoyable little gem with more redeeming spark than you’d expect.

The Heroine is clearly aiming for a gritty, fast-moving crime chase with a tough policewoman at the center and a simple “wrong place, wrong time” setup. The problem is the execution: the technical quality (dubbing and transfer) is rough enough to pull you out of scenes, and the plot plods along without the tension or surprises you’d hope for. The action exists but rarely lands with much punch, and if you’re coming for Jackie Chan, the marketing oversells his presence to the point of feeling like a bait-and-switch. If you can tolerate scrappy, low-rent 70s crime cinema and just want a curiosity piece, you might get a little mileage out of it—otherwise, it’s an easy skip.
