Gia (1998)

Gia is special because it refuses to treat its subject like a cautionary headline; it’s an intimate, bruisingly human portrait of a woman whose magnetism can light up a room even as her loneliness quietly takes it apart. Michael Cristofer frames the late-’70s fashion world with a seductive, lived-in sheen, then lets the glamour curdle into something raw and immediate, anchored by Angelina Jolie’s fearless, uninhibited performance that feels less like acting than exposure. The romance at its center brings real tenderness and heat, not as fantasy, but as a flickering lifeline against the noise in Gia’s head. It’s a heavy watch—explicit, emotionally intense, and unflinching about addiction—so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a drama that hits hard and stays with you, this one earns every minute.

Gia is clearly trying to be a raw, cautionary biopic about fame, loneliness, and addiction, anchored by Angelina Jolie going all-in with a fearless, emotionally exposed performance. The problem is that the movie can feel reductive, rushing through the modeling-world context and relationships in a way that sometimes turns a complicated life into a familiar “rise-and-fall” checklist. It’s also heavy viewing: explicit drug use, intense sex and nudity, and a bleak trajectory that doesn’t offer much relief or reflection beyond the suffering. If you want a nuanced character study with deeper insight into the industry and the people around her, this may frustrate you—but if you can handle tough material and want a stark, performance-driven tragedy, it delivers that.
