An Ideal Husband is the kind of grown-up entertainment we don’t get enough of: a sparkling Oscar Wilde comedy of manners that glides along on razor-sharp dialogue, sumptuous period elegance, and the delicious tension of reputations poised on a pin. Oliver Parker stages it with a polished, storybook sheen, while Rupert Everett turns Lord Goring into a charming weapon—witty, watchful, and unexpectedly sincere—and Cate Blanchett gives the moral center real heat instead of mere virtue. The tone is light on its feet but not weightless, mixing romance and social satire with just enough bite to make the laughter feel earned. If you’re allergic to drawing-room talk or theatrical flourishes, it may feel mannered, but if you want a clever, beautifully acted film that makes adult dilemmas feel like champagne, it’s a delightful evening.

An Ideal Husband is clearly trying to bottle Oscar Wilde’s wit inside a glossy, crowd-pleasing period rom-com, with polished sets, handsome costumes, and a cast that knows how to sell a line. The problem is it often feels too well-behaved: the satire is softened, the pacing can be genteel, and the dialogue—while still clever—doesn’t always land with the bite you’d hope for. If you want sharper social skewering or a more daring, imaginative adaptation, this may play like tasteful drawing-room drama rather than a comedy with teeth. Still, if you’re in the mood for light scandal, charming performances (especially Rupert Everett), and low-stress romance with mild PG-13 sensuality, it’s an easy watch.
